I admit, Im excited to hear that Playboy magazine has opened its pages for franchise in the Philippines. But Im also curious and puzzled at the same time. The news of localizing one of the most sought-after adult publication has raised a few eyebrows, especially from the male poplace. Imagine, our very own version…WITHOUT the nudity! Now how crazy can that be? Don’t get me wrong, Im not really keen on looking at naked women in centerfold. But hey, isn’t that’s what its all about? It has been reported that the mag’s editor-in-chief said that our edition is a lifestyle magazine for sucessful men and women. It is a tamed version of the U.S. but not as bland as the Indonesian read.
Now, that really got me thinking…? How in the world can it stand out against our local FHM and Maxim? Its like eating bicol express without the chillies. If my memory serves me right, Playboy, an adult male magazine started in 1953 with Marilyn Monroe on the cover. Over the years, men have been ogling in fascination on the hundreds of women in centerfold. In fact, this has been the stepping stone for women wanting to make it big in film and fashion. Remember Madonna and our very own Techie Agbayani? Posing for Playboy is a privilege and an art. Didn’t our country hailed Techie as the “most beautiful” when her spread came out? I honestly don’t know how their marketing people fare in promoting it, much more in selling it.
Tsk, tsk, tsk. Im certain this is a major disappointment (and deception). I guess we’ll have to wait and see until it hits the newstands on April 3.
